Board of Education

A school board, often referred to as a Board of Education, is a corporate body that oversees and manages a public school district's affairs, personnel, and properties. School board members are elected by the residents of the school district that the board oversees.

The most important decision the school board makes is selecting the Superintendent who serves as the chief executive officer of the school board. The Superintendent recommends actions for board approval and implements board decisions.

Board of Education members abide by the New Jersey Code of Ethics for school board members. The Board of Education does not administer the school district; they ensure that it is runs well. While board members encourage communication with parents and local stakeholders, there is a chain of communication that should be followed. Community members should always direct questions to the most specific and appropriate level. This means beginning with a specific teacher or building administrator, then approaching a district administrator, and then moving to the central office before approaching a board member with a specific question or issue.
